FIRST LOOK: "The Avengers" Has A $225 Million Budget, A Hot New Female Star And The Ultimate Fanboy Director
The fact that we know so much about "The Avengers," even though it doesn't come out until May 4, 2012, shows why it's such a huge deal.
What's riding on the superhero extravaganza? Well, there are the four franchises that already exist: "Thor,""Iron Man,""Captain America," and "The Hulk."
And there are the potential franchises: "Black Widow," based on Scarlet Johansson's character; "Hawkeye," based on Jeremy Renner's; and, you know, "The Avengers 2."
So, what do we know about the movie so far? Let's get cracking.
"The Avengers" is based on the Marvel comics series, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Since its debut in 1963, there have been over 500 issues, with a rotating cast of heroes that has included Wolverine and Spider-Man as well as the movie's characters.

(Source: Grand Comics Database)
The first hint of a movie version came in a bonus scene after the credits of "Iron Man," when Nick Fury — played by Samuel L. Jackson — tells Robert Downey, Jr.'s Tony Stark that he has "become part of a bigger universe."
Surprisingly, "The Avengers" has been in development since 2005, but it wasn't until "Iron Man" dominated the box office that the movie officially received the green light.

Scarlett Johansson Has Joined The Growing List Of Famous Actresses Who Also Direct
Scarlett Johansson already revealed that she knows her best angles.
Now we'll see how well she can show everyone else's.
The Oscar-winning actress will direct an adaptation of Truman Capote's novella "Summer's Crossing," Entertainment Weekly confirmed.
It's the 26-year-old actress' first stint behind the camera, and it looks like she'll stay there throughout filming — she won't play a role in the movie.
This is the first positive news out of the ScarJo camp in quite a while; recently, she's been dealing with the fallout from leaked nude photos. It also adds her to the lengthening list of actresses with directorial efforts releasing soon.
Angelina Jolie's love story of the Bosnian War, "In the Land of Blood and Honey," comes out December 23, Madonna's "W.E." is slated for next year and Drew Barrymore, after directing a Best Coast video starring Miranda Cosgrove and Donald Glover, will adapt the novel"How To Be Single."
Johansson also made a solid choice of source material: Truman Capote's novella "Breakfast at Tiffany's" was the basis for a classic movie starring Audrey Hepburn, and the film based on his life and novel "In Cold Blood,""Capote," earned a Best Actor Academy Award for star Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Considering the shortage of prominent women directors — only one woman, Kathyrn Bigelow, has ever won the Oscar for Best Director — hopefully this trend will cause some ripples in the industry.
Here Are This Week's Winners And Losers In Hollywood
It was a week of goodbyes.
Some were happy (Regis Philbin earned a star-studded farewell tribute), some were sad (DemiMoore announced divorce plans), and some panicked TV audiences (where did "Community" go?!).
But most importantly, People Magazine learned a very necessary lesson:
Never, ever overlook Ryan Gosling.
Or his fans will find you. And occupy.
LOSER: Laurieann Gibson

The woman behind the Gaga is out of a job.
Lady Gaga cut ties with her creative director Laurieann Gibson this week, amid "rumors" of creative differences.
The two had been working together since 2007.
WINNER: Ricky Gervais

Look who just landed a new gig!
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that RickyGervais will return as host of the Golden Globes.
The choice is both controversial, given his insult-ridden hosting last year, and totally predictable.
LOSER: NBC

The network freaked out "Community" fans this week after it left the cult favorite off of its mid-season schedule.
This isn't an official cancellation!
But just in case, we suggest NBC take a look at a few reasons to not cancel the series.
Don't say we didn't warn you.

Guess What Role Lea Michele, Taylor Swift, Scarlett Johansson And Evan Rachel Wood Are Battling Over?
Four A-list ladies are all hot to play Eponine in the upcoming movie revival of "Les Miserables."
The movie has already cast Hugh Jackman as its central character, Jean Valjean (it's being directed by Tom Hooper, who made "The King's Speech").
Eponine is one of the female leads, who hoards a secret crush on Marius. (Yeah, we know we're impressing you with our "Les Miz" knowledge.)
Anyway, what makes the part desirable is Eponine's classic song, "On My Own."
According to the New York Post, Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift and Evan Rachel Wood all want to play her -- and sing that.
One big thing giving Michele a leg up here: she already sang the classic track on "Glee" -- and elsewhere, like at this Human Rights Council dinner. (Video below.) Plus, she played Cosette as a child.
We think she'd nail the part -- but if one of the other girls wants to lead a Broadway revival of the show, we'll be first in line for tickets.

Scarlett Johansson has been quietly dating an ad exec for about six months, according to the New York Post. He's 38-year-old Nate Naylor, who has been a creative exec at Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco.
His clients have included Coca-Cola, Heineken and Nike, according to his resume.
He also has a Tumblr filled with "artistic" photographs, vintage bondage shots and not-safe-for-work nudes.
Here's Naylor's resume.

Here's Naylor's Linkedin profile. Most recently he was at Weiden & Kennedy in Amsterdam for nine months in 2010. he's also done stints at Modernista, Goodby Silverstein & Partners, Butler Shine Stern & Partners, Philips Ramsey in San Diego and Richardson or Richardson in Phoenix.

But mostly he has worked as a freelance.
He collects adult-oriented art.

In addition to his personal art collection, he also displays arty photos on his Tumblr, titled "Guts." Some of them are a lot more racy than this screenshot from the blog, featuring a hottie in the shower.
Here's his official site.

He's got the whole rock-star typeface/skull iconography thing going on. Hipster alert: His logo is a 1970s man with a mustache showing his flabby stomach to a woman in a bikini top.
If you click on Naylor’s “CV” button a gunshot rings out, followed by a blood-spattered bullet hole in the middle of the deer.

Nate Naylor, Meme: Adman's Colleagues Are Skewering Scarlett Johansson's Boyfriend
The ad agency world wasted little time in reacting to the news that one of its own—former Wieden & Kennedy creative exec Nate Naylor—is Scarlett Johansson's new boyfriend: His former colleagues at Modernista! (another shop he worked at) are trying to turn him into a meme.
They were inspired by a series of paparazzi photos in the Daily Mail that showed the doorstep-jawed adman romancing ScarJo in dark glasses, a hoodie, and pumping his fist into the air as if he were the most awesome bro on the planet.
It's tough to figure out whether the PhotoshopTumblr"Ad Guy Nate Naylor" is motivated by jealousy or affection, but it sure is funny.

Marvel Just Released This Awesome New Poster For 'The Avengers'
Marvel is getting us excited for the reveal of their new trailer tomorrow by spoiling us with a new poster for "The Avengers." And, boy, is it awesome.
The one-sheeter pits the seven stars of the film—Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson—fighting a city in chaos. (Well, except Captain America. He looks like he's modeling as opposed to fighting crime. Sorry Evans.)
The plot follows the Marvel cast assembling together to take down an alien race seeking to destroy the planet led by Thor's brother Loki.
Somesites are wondering why Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) appears without his trademark helmet. What's there to hide? Stark outed himself as Iron Man a long time ago. Batman and Spider-Man have reasons to hide behind their masks.
Plus, he's not the only one without headgear. Take a look at Captain America.
This isn't the first time we've seen the two without their headgear in perilous moments. If anything, this should get us more psyched for the action-packed comic adventure due out May 4.
Check back tomorrow for the new trailer. In the meantime, see the poster chock-full of superheroes below:
Scarlett Johansson Is Going 'Psycho' In New Film About Alfred Hitchock
Scarlett Johansson's next role will require lots of shower time.
According to Variety, The 27-year-old starlet has officially signed on to play "Psycho" actress Janet Leigh in "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho."
The story, based on the book by Stephen Rebello, will chronicle how the late director's small 1960 movie turned into one of the greatest horror films of all time. Although Alfred Hitchcock was at the height of his career when he made the movie, no studio wanted to produce such a seedy film so Hitchcock raised funds himself.
And now, a slew of Hollywood A-listers are coming together to bring Hitchock's untold story to light.
Sir Anthony Hopkins will play the legend himself, Hitchcock, while Dame Helen Mirren will play the part of his wife, Alma Reville.
Sacha Gervasi, of "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" fame, will direct and if all goes according to plan, Variety says Johansson's role should give her a career boost a lá Michelle Williams' Oscar-nominated performance playing Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe in last year's "My Week With Marilyn."
And per The Hollywood Reporter, looks like Scarjo will be stripping down just like the original, doomed Marion Crane character.
We can't wait to see the usually stone-faced Scarjo re-enact this famous scream scene. Watch below.
Now prepare for "The Hunger Games" release next month>>

Watch Scarlett Johansson Knock Out Three Military Men In This New 'Avengers' Clip
We ask and Marvel giveth.
We haven't seen a lot of Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow in the much-anticipated "Avengers" film, but fans can breath a sigh of relief.
In this first semi-extended scene from the film, watch Johansson knock out a military interrogator … while strapped to a chair … and shoeless.
Note this trailer comes right after Sunday's trailer for the "Total Recall" remake featuring Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel having it out onscreen. Coincidence?
"The Avengers" comes out May 4 in theaters.
How Scarlett Johansson Became The Face Of A Hispanic Sex Shop
Just north of the Mexican border in Calexico, Calif., Scarlett Johansson's image is being used to shill sex toys, porn, lingerie, and other sex shop goodies, TMZ reports.
Did the Avengers star decide to branch out in her career and sign a deal with adult superstore VIP?
Considering that she accepted just $400,000 to appear in "Iron Man 2"—a sum that The Hollywood Reporter ruled "less-than-princely"—maybe she needs the money.
But we're betting that VIP just used her picture without permission.
The store manager told TMZ, “What does it have to do with the business card? I don’t know who Scarlett Johansson is.”
Well, anonymous manager, it's time to look into copyright law.

CHART: 'The Avengers' Beats 'Harry Potter' For Highest Opening Weekend Earnings—Ever
Not only did "The Avengers" win at the box office this weekend, they demolished it.
As the Hulk would say: "puny" box office numbers.
The Marvel film grossed over $190 million more than it's competition "Think Like A Man" and almost $200 million more than the other film that opened this weekend, the sort-of indie, fully British film "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel."
"The Avengers" came in second in it's opening day earnings and toppled "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" to come in first for all-time opening weekend earnings.
The superhero gang easily dominated both "The Hunger Games" and all of the "Twilight" films to reach the second and first spots on the two best lists.
Check out the top five in each bracket below.
Now Joss Whedon and his "Avengers" gang are probably flying high right about now and rightly so. But there are still tons of summer movies waiting to possibly break these new records. Our money's on Christopher Nolan's sure-to-be epic conclusion to his Batman series, "The Dark Knight Rises."
The summer movie battle has begun!
Now check out something different. Here are the newest movie trailers from last week >
Scarlett Johansson Will Reportedly Get A Record-Breaking $20M For 'Avengers' Sequel—Here's Today's Buzz
Scarlett Johansson will reportedly receive a record-breaking $20 million paycheck to resume her Black Widow role in "The Avengers" sequel. The payday would beat the standing record for an actress—$19 million reportedly earned by Angelina Jolie for “The Tourist.”
- Vera Wang and her husband of 23 years have decided to separate. Wang is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars—which could lead to a very complicated divorce.
- Celebrity chef Cat Cora was arrested for DUI in Santa Barbara after rear-ending another vehicle—and her mugshot is more like a glamour shot.
- Kristin Chenoweth was rushed to a New York hospital Wednesday after she was struck by a piece of lighting equipment that collapsed on the set of "The Good Wife," causing the petite actress to fall to the ground, hitting her head on the concrete. - Not only are the sales of sex toys up after the success of the erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey," but the classical music mentioned in the book has seen a huge boost in sales as well. Thomas Tallis's Spem in alum, a "40-part motet … written around 1570," has rocketed up the iTunes classical chart. Spem is the piece of music that Christian Grey plays on his first night with Anastasia.
- Angelina Jolie's actor-father Jon Voight is defending Brad Pitt's mother's anti-abortion and same sex marriage letter to her local paper. Voight told Fox News on Tuesday that he agrees with Jane Pitt’s views. “Good for her” for expressing them, Voight said.
- Lady Gaga revealed Lindsay Lohan's stay-skinny secrets on her Twitter: “@lindsaylohan when you ordered a cucumber and a knife to the bar last night I thought your (sic) were gonna perform a vasectomy #justaskinnybitch.” To which Lohan responded, "#skinnysnack1 @ladygaga hahaha.”

ADLAND WEEPS: Scarlett Johansson Splits With Nate Naylor
Scarlett Johansson, 27, has moved on from New York adman/boyfriend, Nate Naylor, 38, according to People. As Business Insider previously noted the two have been quietly dating since mid-2011.
Though, Johansson's rep is not confirming any details of the break-up, sources told People that she broke-up with him, and while he is reportedly quite upset, he most likely saw it coming.
Most people were surprised the pair stayed together as long as they did. He may have been the tall, dark, and handsome (older) man, but they came from very different worlds. Things didn't look too great for Naylor when, in July, Johansson was spotted sunbathing in France with her bodyguard.
Naylor is currently a freelance creative executive, with an impressive resume featuring Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco. But Johansson is one of the biggest movie stars of the moment.
Naylor seems to have been just a nice moment out of the spotlight for Johansson — she rebounded from her two-year marriage to Ryan Reynolds by dating Sean Penn, and now, reports are saying she may be back with her ex-boyfriend, Jared Leto.
