Netflix's 'Glow' star Alison Brie defended James Franco on the red carpet, after Scarlett Johansson called him out at the Women's March

Allison Brie Dave Franco SAG Awards 2018

  • Alison Brie, who is the star of Netflix's "Glow," came to James Franco's defense on the SAG Awards red carpet Sunday night.
  • She told E! News that not everything that's been reported about Franco, who is her brother-in-law, has been accurate.
  • On Saturday, Scarlett Johansson slammed Franco for wearing a Time's Up pin to the Golden Globes, saying, "I want my pin back."

Alison Brie defended her brother-in-law James Franco a day after Scarlett Johansson publicly slammed him.

While walking the red carpet at Sunday night's SAG Awards, Brie, who is the star of Netflix's "Glow" and is married to Dave Franco, was quick to defend James amidst allegations of sexually 'exploitative' behavior with women.

“I think that above all what we’ve always said is that it remains vital that anyone that feels victimized should and does have the right to speak out and come forward,” Brie told E! News. “I obviously support my family, and not everything that’s been reported has been accurate, so I think we’re waiting to get all the information. But of course now is the time for listening, and that’s what we are all trying to do.”

The day before the SAG Awards, which James Franco attended despite the allegations, "The Avengers" star Scarlett Johansson criticized him at the LA Women's March. Johansson called out Franco for wearing a Time's Up pin at the 2018 Golden Globes.

“My mind baffles," Johansson said. "How could a person publicly stand by an organization that helps to provide support for victims of sexual assault while privately preying on people who have no power? I want my pin back, by the way.”

Some were quick to criticize Johansson for her comments about Franco, since she hasn't come forward with a statement addressing the allegation that Woody Allen sexually assaulted his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. Johansson has worked with Allen on three films including "Match Point,""Scoop," and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

In fact, Johansson came to Allen's defense a few years ago.

"I think it's irresponsible to take a bunch of actors that will have a Google alert on and to suddenly throw their name into a situation that none of us could possibly knowingly comment on," Johansson told The Guardian in 2014 after Dylan Farrow's op-ed in The New York Times. "That just feels irresponsible to me."

Several actors who have starred in Allen's films, including Colin Firth, Greta Gerwig, Ellen Page, Timothée Chalamet, and Rebecca Hall (who co-starred with Johansson in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona") have publicly denounced Allen in recent weeks, pledging to never work with him again.

James Franco was nominated for a SAG Award for best actor in a leading role for "The Disaster Artist," but he lost to Gary Oldman for his role as Winston Churchill in the "The Darkest Hour."

Scarlett Johansson wore a dress from a brand founded by Harvey Weinstein's estranged wife Georgina Chapman — and she's the first celebrity to do it since the scandal erupted

scarlett johansson met gala 2018 marchesa dress

  • At this year's Met Gala, Scarlett Johansson wore a dress designed by Marchesa, the fashion brand co-founded by film producer Harvey Weinstein's estranged wife, Georgina Chapman.
  • According to multiple outlets, it's the first time a "major celebrity" has worn Marchesa on the red carpet since sexual harassment allegations against Weinstein broke in October 2017.
  • Marchesa's presence on the red carpet has dwindled since the Weinstein allegations surfaced.
  • In February, Chapman's best friend and Marchesa co-founder Keren Craig said that the two are working on taking the brand in a new direction — one that supports the #MeToo movement and Time's Up initiative.
  • In a statement to People magazine, Johansson said that she wore one of Marchesa's designs to the Met Gala because the brand's "clothes make women feel confident and beautiful."

With boyfriend Colin Jost by her side, Scarlett Johansson made a splash at this year's Met Gala in a flowing ombré gown with cascading swaths of magenta tulle and pink flowers. While her dress was a tame choice for the night, it's raising eyebrows for a different reason.

Johansson's dress was designed by Marchesa, the fashion brand co-founded by film producer Harvey Weinstein's estranged wife, Georgina Chapman. According to multiple outlets, it's the first time a "major celebrity" has worn Marchesa on the red carpet since sexual harassment allegations against Weinstein broke in October 2017.

Since then, more than 50 women have come forward to accuse Weinstein of rape, indecent exposure, and intimidation, among other accusations. Weinstein, who has "unequivocally denied" all allegations of "non-consensual sex" through a spokesperson, is currently under multiple investigations for sexual assault in New York, London, and Los Angeles.

Chapman announced her decision to leave Weinstein days after the allegations against him surfaced in October. In a statement to People magazine, the designer said that caring for her "young children" was her first priority. "My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions," she added.

Still, Marchesa's presence on the red carpet has dwindled since the Weinstein allegations broke, especially after some claimed that the producer had pressured them into wearing the brand's designs. Once a popular choice among A-listers like Blake Lively and Nicole Kidman, the label has struggled to return to the spotlight over the past few months.

In an interview with Grazia in February, Chapman's best friend and Marchesa co-founder Keren Craig detailed the label's efforts to stay afloat in the wake of the Weinstein scandal. According to Craig, she and Chapman are working on taking the brand in a new direction — one that supports the #MeToo movement and Time's Up initiative, both of which aim to combat systemic sexual harassment and sexism. "We want to make a gesture," Craig said about these campaigns. "We need to properly process how it can be the most beneficial."

Johansson, a vocal supporter of the #MeToo movement and one of the original signers of the Time's Up letter,  appears to be on board with Marchesa's efforts to move forward. In a statement to People, the "Avengers" star said that she wore one of the brand's designs to the Met Gala because Marchesa's "clothes make women feel confident and beautiful." Johansson continued: "And it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers."

In a statement to INSIDER, Marchesa said it was "truly honored that [Johansson] chose to wear [the brand] for the Met Gala." The statement continued: "She is an amazingly talented actor who has incredible style and presence. It was wonderful to work so closely with her in creating this custom look."

All the details we know about the Black Widow standalone movie starring Scarlett Johansson, which finally found its director

Black WidowAfter nearly a decade of playing the role, Scarlett Johansson is finally getting her own Black Widow movie.

The one thing that DC has on Marvel is a movie starring a female hero. 2017's "Wonder Woman" was a wonderful movie, and its sequel looks just as promising so far. Thankfully Marvel is catching up: "Captain Marvel" is coming out in early 2019, and the Black Widow movie finally has a director. Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland will be the first woman to direct a MCU film without a male co-director: Anna Boden is a co-director on "Captain Marvel" with Ryan Fleck.

Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has stated that it is putting a lot of time and effort into making this movie right: the character has, after all, been appearing in these movies for almost a decade, so she deserves a proper movie. More than 65 directors were interviewed to take on the project, in a process that took over half a year.

While Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) doesn't actually have superhuman powers (or enough money to make an iron suit), the character is integral to the franchise. She uses her skills as a former assassin and a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to bring the Avengers together and keep them that way.

She has a complex but little-seen history, since she used to be a deadly assassin for the KGB. She was spared by Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), who was supposed to assassinate her.

Here's everything we know about her standalone movie:

SEE ALSO: Marvel Cinematic Universe movies have been on a serious hot streak, and it didn't happen by accident

It will be part of the MCU's phase 4 line-up.

Phase 4 starts after "Avengers 4" with "Spider-Man: Homecoming 2" (July 2019), and will also include "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which doesn't have a release date yet.

Jac Schaeffer is writing the screenplay.

Scaheffer wrote 2009's "TiMER," the short "Olaf's Frozen Adventure," and 2019's upcoming "The Hustle," which stars Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson.

Johansson is reportedly contributing ideas to the screenplay. In 2016, Johansson told Variety about the endless possibilities for Black Widow film:

"There’s a lot of places you can go — you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There’s all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she’s part of. There are so many ways you can go. I think it would just have to be very much like its own specific thing. It would have to have its own specific vibe. It would have been totally different than any of the other standalone films. I think if the fans wanted it enough, then it would probably become a reality."

Filming will begin next year.

This probably means that the movie will come out in 2020 or 2021, depending which half of 2019 filming takes place.

Scarlett Johansson calls the claim that she auditioned to date Tom Cruise 'demeaning' and 'crazy'

  • Brendan Tighe, a former Scientologist, appeared on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today" on Wednesday.
  • Tighe said that while he worked with the church, he saw a report revealing that Scarlett Johansson had supposedly auditioned to be in a relationship with Tom Cruise
  • He said that the report mentioned that the audition "didn't go well" and another Scientologist, "Parenthood" actress Erika Christensen, was told to distance herself from Johansson.
  • The Church of Scientology International told "Today" that "the 'access' he [Tighe] boasts of having was largely limited to viewing security cameras from a guard booth."
  • In a statement to INSIDER, Johansson said: "The very idea of any person auditioning to be in a relationship is so demeaning; I refuse for anyone to spread the idea that I lack the integrity to choose my own relationships. Only a man aka Brendan Tighe would come up with a crazy story like that."

Scarlett Johansson is denying a claim that she auditioned to be in a relationship with Tom Cruise

"The very idea of any person auditioning to be in a relationship is so demeaning; I refuse for anyone to spread the idea that I lack the integrity to choose my own relationships," Johansson said in a statement to INSIDER Wednesday.

Former Scientologist Brendan Tighe appeared on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today" on Wednesday and discussed his experience as a member of the church. During his interview, Tighe said he saw evidence that Johansson was one of the women who supposedly auditioned to be Tom Cruise's partner following his split with Nicole Kidman in the early 2000s.

At the time, Tighe was a member of Cruise's Scientology security unit. According to the 38-year-old, "a bunch of reports kept coming to my printer by mistake." Tighe said that of the reports he viewed, Johansson's was the only name that was recognizable — and he said her audition "didn't go well."

"It [the report] just simply said that it didn't go well and that another actress, Erika Christensen [who was friends with Johansson], had to disconnect from Scarlett Johansson because that didn't go well," Tighe said. "That was in that report."

"Only a man aka Brendan Tighe would come up with a crazy story like that," Johansson's statement continued.

In response to statements made by Tighe regarding his interactions with Scientologists like Cruise, Karin Pouw from the Church of Scientology International told "Megyn Kelly Today":

"Brendan Tighe was a Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization security guard/night watchman from 2002 to 2009. The 'access' he boasts of having was largely limited to viewing security cameras from a guard booth. He was removed from that position for dereliction of duty."

Tighe told Kelly that Pouw's statement was "not even remotely true."

Tighe, who left Scientology in 2011, has previously spoken about actor Tom Cruise's involvement in Scientology. In April 2018, Tighe said that Johansson was 1.1 on Scientology's "tone scale," which is believed by the church to measure a person's emotions. He added that the actress' score indicated feelings of "covert hostility."

Johansson obviously didn’t end up with Cruise. But according to an article published by Vanity Fair in 2012 with reporting from Maureen Orth, members of Scientology were selected and went through an audition process to see if they were a suitable match. They reportedly chose actress Nazanin Boniadi, who was in a relationship with the "Mission: Impossible" actor from November 2004 to January 2005. It was also reported that Cruise was interested in "Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara.

In mid 2005, Cruise made his first public appearance with Katie Holmes. They welcomed daughter Suri in April 2006 and were married in Italy a few months later. Cruise and Holmes filed for divorce in June 2012, and many have speculated that Scientology was a factor in the split.

Representatives for Cruise didn't immediately respond to INSIDER's request for comment.

Scarlett Johansson is being criticized for a tone-deaf response about playing a trans person

  • Scarlett Johansson is being criticized for taking a role as a transgender man in an upcoming movie.
  • She said that questions can be directed to "Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment"— all fellow cisgendered actors have played trans characters.
  • Her response is being criticized as tone deaf.

Scarlett Johansson responded to criticism that she's apparently playing a transgender man, Dante 'Tex' Gill, in her upcoming movie "Rub & Tug."

Through a representative, Johansson told Bustle that questions should be deflected to other cisgender actors who have also taken on trans roles.

"Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment," Johansson told Bustle, referring to cisgender actors who have played trans characters in "Transparent,""Dallas Buyers Club," and "Transamerica," respectively.

"Rub & Tug" is a planned biopic about Gill, a trans man and Pittsburgh crime kingpin in the 1970s, who became wealthy and powerful by controlling massage parlors and drug rings. The movie will be directed by Rupert Sanders, who directed Johansson is the much-maligned "Ghost in Shell" movie in 2017, which was itself widely criticized for casting Johansson as a character who was a Japanese robot in the movie's manga source material.

Critics have little confidence that Johansson can responsibly play the role. Many trans people object to the idea of a cisgender actor playing trans characters, noting that those casting choices take away parts from trans-identified people.

Johansson's response generated its own backlash. People accused her of being tone-dead in her response and role decisions.

A representative for Johansson didn't immediately respond to INSIDER's request for comment.

Scarlett Johansson is being unfairly criticized for doing her job after being cast as a transgender man

Scarlett Johansson doesn’t care about trans people (and neither does Hollywood)

  • Scarlett Johansson is playing a transgender man for the movie "Rub & Tug."
  • The news has upset some in the trans community, who criticize Hollywood for giving their stories to cis actors.
  • In response to the backlash, a representative for Johansson referred to other cis actors who have played trans people, including Jeffrey Tambor, Felicity Huffman, and Jared Leto.

The real Dante “Tex” Gill, sporting a three-piece suit and a mean mug, was the archetype of masculine swagger. It’s hard to imagine Hollywood sex symbol Scarlett Johansson playing such a character, especially one described in their own obituary as “short and dumpy,” but that is exactly what she intends to do in “Rub & Tug.”

Johansson’s casting announcements cited Gill as a woman who dressed as a man, but Screencrush writer E. Oliver Whitney pointed out that Gill was most likely a transgender man.

Johansson’s casting prompted harsh rebukes from the trans community, which has repeatedly complained of seeing their stories co-opted by cis people in Hollywood. Johansson told Bustle through a representative: “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.”

It’s a statement that has echoes of “let them eat cake,” and her clueless comment suggests she’s every bit as out of touch as Marie Antoinette. While all three of those actors were lauded for their roles at the time, the Oscar-nominated Huffman starred in “Transamerica” 13 years ago; Leto won his “Dallas Buyers Club” Oscar in 2014; and the Emmy-winning Tambor (“Transparent”) is a hot mess who — even when he was still lauded — was starting to get serious blowback for his portrayal. The world has changed, radically, and what was acceptable (and successful) then, isn’t now.

By referring to three trans roles, she tacitly acknowledges Gill’s trans identity, eliminating any plausible deniability on her part. But if Johansson is hoping for her Oscar moment with a movie called “Rub & Tug,” she is in for a rude awakening — and she slept through the last five years of trans film and TV.

She clearly missed the underwhelming response to The Weinstein Company’s 2015 “3 Generations,” in which Elle Fanning pouted her way through a trans teenager’s transition (domestic box office: $156,000). Or “Anything” in 2017, which starred Matt Bomer as a caricature of a trans woman (domestic box office: $19,000). Both movies were also critical failures, and faced significant criticism well before their release. Although it didn’t help the movie much, “Anything” executive producer Mark Ruffalo acknowledged his mistake. “To the Trans community. I hear you,” Ruffalo tweeted. “It’s wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation. It’s time.”

However, Johansson passes over accountability in favor of passing the buck. Her curt and flippant response not only reveals her indifference toward the very people whose stories she seeks to mine, but also an overweening ignorance of Hollywood history. Movies are known for their disregard of marginalized groups, from the minstrelsy of Al Jolson, to Mickey Rooney’s Oscar-nominated Mr. Yunioshi in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” to Emma Stone as hapa Hawaiian Allison Ng in “Aloha.” However, Johansson’s commentary has all the sophistication and naiveté of a child pointing fingers when caught in the act: “He did it first!”

All of this piles onto the massive failure that was the tone-deaf “Ghost in the Shell,” which cast Johansson in the lead role of a Japanese manga adaptation. (The director was Rupert Sanders, who will also direct “Rub & Tug.”) “Ghost in the Shell” received terrible reviews and lost somewhere between $60 million-$100 million.

Adding insult to injury, Hollywood offers so few roles for trans people. In response to the “Rub & Tug” casting, trans actresses Trace Lysette (“Transparent”) and Jamie Clayton (“Sense8”) both said the most insidious element of this casting trend is that the coin doesn’t flip both ways. “I wouldn’t be as upset if I was getting in the same rooms as Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett for cis roles, but we know that’s not the case,” Lysette said.

2018 has been a banner year for trans storytelling in Hollywood: “A Fantastic Woman” became the first film starring an out trans actress to win an Oscar; FX debuted “Pose,” a TV show about trans people of color that stars actual trans people of color; and Silas Howard’s “A Kid Like Jake” took on childhood gender variance with the nuanced artfulness only a trans director could provide. It’s heartening that certain people in Hollywood are starting to listen to trans people, and are stepping aside to let trans people tell trans stories. In her flippancy, Johansson made one thing painfully clear: She isn’t one of them.

  • Johansson’s controversial casting as Dante "Tex" Gill, a trans man, was met with an immediate outcry from those who believe that trans roles should be played by trans actors.
  • Anger grew after the actress’ initial public response was widely viewed as insensitive.
  • A week into the casting backlash, Johansson has pulled out of "Rub & Tug."

Actress Scarlett Johansson’s casting in the true story of trans man Dante "Tex" Gill in the upcoming film "Rub & Tug" was met with widespread dismay from many who believe that trans roles should be played by trans actors.

While social media and commentators debated the ethics of Johansson’s casting—believing that her casting would contribute to the erasure of trans people — the actress appeared to double down after the initial backlash. She released a response via her representative, who told Bustle regarding the detractors: "Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment."

All of these actors have been criticized for playing transgender roles in the past. Johansson’s response was viewed as tone-deaf and insensitive to the trans community’s concerns.

Following a week of continued criticism, Johansson is now officially out of "Rub & Tug."

In a considerable change of tune, the actress told Out Magazine in a statement: "In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project. Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive. I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues. According to GLAAD, LGBTQ+ characters dropped 40% in 2017 from the previous year, with no representation of trans characters in any major studio release."

Johansson went on to state, "While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film. I believe that all artists should be considered equally and fairly."

Many took to Twitter to voice the support of the move.

Though some were skeptical.

Johansson’s withdrawal from the role because of public criticism could be a watershed moment in the casting of trans roles.

Could the pressure faced by Johansson, one of the most successful and recognizable movie stars in the world, and her ultimate exit from the project, mean that she will be among the last cis-gender actors considered for a trans role?

  • Scarlett Johansson has dropped out of the movie "Rub and Tug," in which she would have played Dante "Tex" Gill, a transgender man who used a massage parlor as a front for prostitution in the 1970s.
  • Johansson faced backlash for her casting.

Scarlett Johansson is withdrawing from "Rub and Tug," the movie in which she was cast as Dante "Tex" Gill, a transgender man who gained money and power by using a massage parlor as a front for prostitution in 1970s Pittsburgh. Johansson received backlash for her casting as a trans man, including from the transgender community.

Johansson issued a statement to Out Magazine on Friday announcing her departure, saying: "Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive."

She went on to say, "I understand why many feel [Gill] should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film."

Trans actresses such as Trace Lysette and Jamie Clayton criticized Johansson's casting last week, saying that trans actors are confined to playing trans roles, while non-trans actors, like Johansson, get roles portraying trans characters.

"So you can continue to play us but we can’t play y’all?" Lysette tweeted. "I wouldn’t be as upset if I was getting in the same rooms as Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett for cis roles, but we know that’s not the case."

Clayton tweeted: "Actors who are trans never even get to audition FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN ROLES OF TRANS CHARACTERS. THATS THE REAL ISSUE. WE CANT EVEN GET IN THE ROOM."

After the backlash, Johansson first issued a statement through her representatives that was lambasted as tone-deaf.

"Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment," Johansson told Bustle, citing non-trans actors who have taken on trans roles.

GLAAD issued a statement Friday calling Johansson's exit from the film a game changer.

"Scarlett Johansson’s announcement, together with the transgender voices who spoke out about this film, are game changers for the future of transgender images in Hollywood,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said. “Hollywood changed how Americans understand gay and lesbian lives, and TV is starting to do the same for transgender people with authentic transgender portrayals being major hits with critics and audiences. The film industry has a real opportunity to do the same."

Read Johansson's full statement below:

"In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project. • Scarlett Johansson attended the 2018 Emmys on Monday at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater.
  • She was in attendance to support boyfriend Colin Jost, who co-hosted the show with "Saturday Night Live's" Michael Che.
  • Reports that Johansson and Jost were dating began in 2017 and they have since gone public with their relationship.

Scarlett Johansson wasn't nominated for an award at the 2018 Emmys, but there's a good reason why she was in attendance.

The "Avengers: Infinity War" actress stunned in a white sequined dress paired with yellow eye makeup — and was joined by boyfriend Colin Jost. The two stars walked the carpet together and Jost co-hosted the show with "Saturday Night Live's" Michael Che.

Johansson and Jost were first linked in 2017, and the couple has since gone public with their relationship. They paired up for a gala at the American Museum of Natural History in late November 2017 and the Marvel actress made a surprise appearance on "SNL" in December 2017 — and they were seen holding hands while ice skating as the show's credits rolled

In 2018, the couple attended the "Avengers: Infinity War" premiere and the Met Gala. Most recently Jost and Che appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and joked about how their dynamics have changed since Johansson and 36-year-old started dating.

"You don't invite me places and when you do, you ditch me," Che joked.

After Jost quipped that he "never invited me anywhere," Che said: "Well, yeah because if you're with, like, Scarlett Johansson, I don't want to tell you to come to this dive bar with me and watch the Yankees game. I feel like maybe you have better things to do."

At this year's Emmys,  Jost, Che, and the cast of "SNL" are nominated for several awards, including outstanding variety sketch series and outstanding writing for a variety series.

Scarlett Johansson will make $15 million for her Black Widow movie — here's how that compares to 5 other Marvel Cinematic Universe stars

Black Widow Disney final

After being in six Marvel Cinematic Universe movies as Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson is finally getting paid big time.

The actress is going to be taking in $15 million for her upcoming standalone movie, a salary that equals what Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth both earned on “Avengers: Infinity War,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

If you think six movies (counting “Avengers 4”) is quite a long time to get a raise (Johansson earned a low seven-figure check for the first “Avengers” movie back in 2012, according to THR), it’s actually par for the course when it comes to how Disney and Marvel Studios pay stars. Basically, the longer you stay in the franchise, the more you’ll eventually make.

Here’s how much 5 other actors have been paid during their time in the MCU:

Chris Hemsworth — $150,000 for “Thor” (2011) / $15 million for “Avengers: Infinity War” (2017)

The actor didn’t have many credits to his name when he came on to play Odin’s son in the first movie, so he didn’t have much leverage when it came to negotiating a salary. But clearly things have worked out well for him.

Chris Evans — $1 million for “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011) / $15 million for “Avengers: Infinity War” (2017)

This Chris likely got a little more because he had better name recognition when he agreed to play Steve Rogers. In fact, he had already played a superhero. He was Johnny Storm in the early 2000s version of the “Fantastic Four” franchise.

Chadwick Boseman — $2 million for “Black Panther” (2017) / Upcoming MCU movies: Unknown

For Disney standards, starting out at $2 million isn’t bad. And being part of one of the biggest Marvel hits of all time certainly led to Boseman getting a nice bonus. He’ll definitely be looking at bigger paydays playing T’Challa going forward.

Scarlett Johansson says trying to stop people making deepfake porn videos of her is a 'lost cause'

Scarlett Johansson

  • The actress Scarlett Johansson spoke to The Washington Post about the rise of using "deepfake" technology to superimpose women's faces onto porn videos.
  • Deepfakes use artificial-intelligence software to collate pictures of a person and then graph their face onto footage of someone else.
  • Johansson, who has been the target of numerous deepfake porn videos, said that trying to stop it was a "lost cause."
  • Deepfake pornography has also been used to target women who are not famous.

Scarlett Johansson recently spoke to The Washington Post about how "deepfake" technology is being used to superimpose women's faces onto pornography, and she said that trying to stop it was a "lost cause."

Deepfake technology uses artificial-intelligence software to superimpose images of a person's face onto footage of someone else, or simulate them saying something they did not say.

Read more:A viral video that appeared to show Obama calling Trump a "dips---" shows a disturbing new trend called "deepfakes"

The Post's article highlighted that women are being disproportionately grafted onto pornographic videos.

Johansson has been the victim of multiple deepfake porn videos, one of which, The Post said, wrongly claimed to be genuine "leaked" footage and had garnered over 1.5 million views on a major porn site.

"Nothing can stop someone from cutting and pasting my image or anyone else's onto a different body and making it look as eerily realistic as desired," Johansson said.

"The fact is that trying to protect yourself from the internet and its depravity is basically a lost cause," she told The Post, adding, "The internet is a vast wormhole of darkness that eats itself."

Public figures like Johansson are not the only women to be targeted by deepfake pornography. One woman whose face had been superimposed onto a porn video told The Post she felt "violated."

"It's this weird feeling, like you want to tear everything off the internet," she said. "But you know you can't."

While still not entirely convincing, deepfake technology is quickly advancing. The aim of targeted pornography videos could be less to convince and more to humiliate and harass women.

The Post found that some users on discussion boards and private chats claim to make videos by request, at roughly $20 a video.

The Post said it tracked down the request that resulted in the woman's video. The requester had supplied 491 photos of her face, many from her Facebook account, according to the newspaper.

Deepfake videos exist in a legal limbo, making it difficult for victims to track down perpetrators or remove content. According to The Post, some experts think the videos may be protected by the First Amendment, though they might also fall under the category of defamation, identity theft, or fraud.

Here's why Scarlett Johansson's personal trainers suggest always eating dark chocolate before a workout

  • Personal trainers who have worked with the likes of Scarlett Johansson recommend eating dark chocolate before a workout.
  • Brothers Ryan and Eric Johnson say there are many benefits to the routine, including boosting your energy and creating a positive feedback loop.
  • Ideally, they say you should eat a third of a bar of high quality dark chocolate 15 minutes before a workout.

Chocolate and fitness are two things that most people don't assume go hand-in-hand.

However, for two personal trainers, chocolate is the key to a good workout.

Ryan and Eric Johnson are the brothers behind Homage Fitness, a new line of gyms in private residences across Miami, New York, and D.C. designed to combine top level fitness with hospitality.

The brothers, who are certified strength and conditioning coaches, have over a decade of experience in the fitness industry.

They also happen to be Scarlett Johansson's personal trainers and have worked with her and other actors on films such as "Captain America: Winter Soldier,""Ghost in The Shell," and "Avengers: Infinity War — Part 1."

The most surprising part of their workout routines? The duo always eat dark chocolate as a pre-workout snack — and they encourage their clients to do the same.

Eric and Ryan Johnson_2

"We're always searching for a good pre-workout supplement but most of the things you can buy in stores are full of sugar and caffeine," Eric told INSIDER.

"We already drink way too much coffee and most of our clients do too, so we wanted to find something which was more naturally organic and that would give you the same benefits."

The benefits of chocolate in moderation are well documented.

The brothers say that good quality dark chocolate (ideally at least 70% cacao) has been proven to release endorphins that make us feel good.

What's more, a recent study found that people who eat chocolate three times a month had a reduced risk of heart failure of 13%, compared to those who ate none. Similarly, as an anti-inflammatory food, chocolate is linked to living longer.

Eric Johnson

"Dark chocolate releases dopamine and has a lot of benefits such as vasodilation which is basically that pump that people are after when they're trying to build muscle," Eric continues.

"It also benefits your brain function because it stimulates your brain cells to release that dopamine. And it also releases serotonin which is going to calm the nervous system down."

Science aside, the fitness gurus encourage people to get into the habit of eating dark chocolate before a workout for psychological reasons too.

"It creates this positive feedback loop with your brain — now that you're getting this piece of chocolate before your workout you're creating a positive association with your training session and you're getting more excited to get to the gym... you have something to look forward to," Ryan says.

Read more: A personal trainer explains why you shouldn't let yourself get too hungry if you're trying to lose fat

They add that dark chocolate is also simply a great source of essential energy.

"If you just go into your session on an empty stomach, you probably won’t last or you might feel a bit sick," Ryan continues.

"But at the same time, if you have too much food, you often feel a bit bogged down, heavy, and lethargic. So we found that the little piece of dark chocolate doesn’t have much weight to it but it's very nutrient-dense so it really provides the body with a lot of energy whilst still making you feel light in the stomach, allowing you to jump around and move."

Ryan and Eric don't mean you should only have one tiny square, either — in fact, they recommend having around two to three pieces, about a third of a standard size chocolate bar, or 30-50g.

If you're attempting to lose weight and thus are aiming to be in a calorie deficit, it's worth noting that you'll need to factor this extra snack into your daily goals: 50g of dark chocolate typically contains around 300 calories.

"While the benefits of this nutrient dense snack (such as the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties alone) outweigh the extra calories, one should certainly account for them," Eric says.

"Depending on your current fitness goals, personal stats (height, weight, body fat percentage, waist measurement), and activity levels, you should factor in the amount you consume to ensure that meet your energy intake requirements."

Ryan Johnson

You need to be eating good quality chocolate, too.

"Don't get the crappy stuff," Eric and Ryan say. "We want high quality stuff so you can reap the benefits of the antioxidants that are going to be in there as well."

Ideally, the brothers advise having your chocolate 10 to 15 minutes before your workout — their preferred approach is to pop a couple of squares in on the way to the gym and just let it melt in their mouths.

Occasionally, however, they haven't been able to get their chocolate fix in advance, which mean there's only one option left.

"Sometimes we eat our chocolate when warming up in the gym," Ryan and Eric say. "People look at us like we're mad!"

Bringing your phone to the gym could be sabotaging your workout, according to Scarlett Johansson's personal trainers

man on phone in gym

  • Taking your phone into the gym with you could be sabotaging your workouts, according to Scarlett Johansson's personal trainer.
  • People end up mindlessly scrolling through social media, making their rest periods much longer than they should be to get the best results.
  • Tracking your rests between sets "can improve your workout exponentially," say Eric and Ryan Johnson.

On any trip to the gym, certain sights are a given: squirming faces from PT victims, gym bros grunting their way through each bicep curl, and people sitting around on their phones.

Yes, whether you're taking selfies in the mirror or scrolling through Instagram while waiting for the dude on the leg-press to quit hogging the machine, gym-goers always tend to have their phones on them these days.

But according to two celebrity personal trainers, having your phone on you while you exercise could be sabotaging your workout.

Eric and Ryan Johnson_2

Ryan and Eric Johnson are the brothers behind Homage Fitness, a new line of gyms in private residences across Miami, New York, and D.C. designed to combine top level fitness with hospitality.

The brothers, who are certified strength and conditioning coaches, have over a decade of experience in the fitness industry.

Ryan told INSIDER that people should leave their phone in the locker room if they want to make their workouts more efficient. Otherwise, they end up mindlessly scrolling through social media, making their rest periods much longer than they should be.

The only time exception to the rule is if your phone is the only way you can track and measure your rest periods, which he says is essential — but there are watches or clocks you can use for this.

"It's very easy to get distracted in the gym and let your minute-long rest turn into three or four minutes which in turn is going to make the intensity of your workout go way down," he said.

"By systematically measuring and tracking your rest time, that creates a much cleaner programme. Knowing that, say, between every set you've had a minute and a half rest, it's really pleasing to the brain."

The brothers believe being regimented about your rest time can "improve your workout exponentially."

Eric Johnson

Taking some rest time between sets in the gym is recommended by fitness experts, but how long yours last depends on your goal.

"If you're after maximal strength, longer rest intervals will allow you to optimally achieve higher intensities (the amount lifted)," the brothers explained. "With large muscle compound movements that generate high levels of metabolic disturbance like squats, deadlifts, presses, and rows, the optimal strategy will be to take two to five minutes between sets."

This ensures the muscles have adequate time to regenerate energy before the next set — ideally, you should perform these moves at the beginning of your training session.

Read more: Getting too hungry could be stopping you losing weight, according to a top PT

"If you are looking to create metabolic stress in order to prioritize fat loss or hypertrophy [the growth of muscles], the strategy should call for shorter rest periods," the brothers explained. "Isolation types of exercises, like biceps curls, tricep extensions, and leg extensions, are not as metabolically taxing and require less recovery time.

"Therefore, to heighten metabolic stress and cellular swelling (the infamous 'pump' where the muscle becomes engorged with blood), it is best to keep rest periods between 15 to 60 seconds."

They added that you should work on these single joint movements towards the end of your workout when your energy is lower — and to make sure you're really focusing, leave your phone in your bag.

"The removal of distractions will allow you to be more present and aware during your workout," the brothers agreed.

"Not only will you become more efficient, your undivided attention will improve the amount of effort you put forth, reduce the chance of injury, and probably have a lot fewer gym enemies."

Scarlett Johansson's personal trainers say burpees are a waste of time — here's what you should be doing instead

Scarlet Johansson burpees

  • Scarlett Johansson's personal trainers believe that if there's one exercise we should stop doing, it's the burpee.
  • Ryan and Eric Johnson told INSIDER that most people can't even do the dreaded movement properly.
  • They explained that the only real benefit of burpees is that they get your heart rate up, and there are plenty of other moves that do that while also helping your body to get stronger.
  • Instead of burpees, try kettlebell swings, squat jumps, or boxing.

If you're into keeping fit, burpees are often considered a necessary evil.

A burpee is a full-body movement which involves jumping with your arms raised from a standing position, then dropping straight into a squat followed by a press-up, before jumping up again to repeat the process.

They get your heart pounding, and all your muscles fired up — but very few people enjoy them.

Burpees

Still, the idea is that they're worth doing because they work your whole body, burn energy whilst building strength, and get your heart rate up.

However, putting yourself through the pain of burpees may not be as beneficial as you've been led to believe.

That's according to two celebrity personal trainer brothers who say burpees aren't worth doing, and are like "adding garbage for the sake of it."

"If there's one specific exercise people should stop doing it'd probably be the burpee," Eric Johnson told INSIDER.

Eric is one half of Homage Fitness, a new line of gyms in private residences across Miami, New York, and D.C. designed to combine top level fitness with hospitality.

Eric and Ryan Johnson_2

Along with his brother Ryan, Eric is a certified strength and conditioning coach and has over a decade of experience in the fitness industry.

He's also Scarlett Johansson's personal trainer — the brothers even have worked with her and other actors on films such as "Captain America: Winter Soldier,""Ghost in The Shell," and "Avengers: Infinity War — Part 1."

Not only do the fitness experts believe most people can't do burpees properly, but they added that the only real benefit is that they get your heart rate up — and there are far more efficient ways to do that.

Read more: Here's why Scarlett Johansson's personal trainers suggest always eating dark chocolate before a workout

"Most people don't have adequate mobility to get into a deep squat, so they're going to flex their back," Eric explained.

"In the bigger picture I don't believe that a burpee will have any sort of advantage that will make you hit your performance goals, other than getting your heart rate up, and there are so many other tools to do that that will actually transfer over and help you in other facets of your training plan."

Commenting that the move also has a "grotesque" name, he added: "Where do you really do a burpee anywhere in life?"

Try kettlebell swings instead

kettlebell swing

Eric recommends kettlebell swings as an alternative to burpees.

A kettlebell swing entails swinging a kettlebell in a pendulum motion, starting under your groin with bent legs and finishing with straight legs and arms outstretched at around shoulder height, before swinging the kettlebell back through your legs again.

"You're going to get the benefits of an explosive movement that's going to get your heart rate up but is also going to hit your hamstrings, glutes, lats, and core," he said.

"Learning that skill is going to transfer over if you wanted to deadlift or just look better or get your heart rate up."

He added that it's a similar pattern to a burpee, because "you're getting a big hip hinge and full body movement.

"I think that's going to be a lot more beneficial," he said.

Read more: Scarlett Johansson's personal trainers say taking your phone to the gym could be ruining your workout

Eric says a squat jump— which involves jumping upwards from a squat position before landing back in the squat — can be effective too, provided you have the technique down and are able to perform the movement with the correct form.

And if you hate kettlebell swings and squat jumps as much as burpees, Ryan suggests boxing.

"Learning how to box or any kind of martial art is a great replacement for burpees," he said. "Replace a minute of burpees with a minute of hitting a heavy bag"– not only a good way to raise your heart rate, but also to let out your anger.

  • The gender pay gap is just as present in Hollywood as it is in less glamorous careers.
  • According to Forbes, the top 10 highest-paid actresses earn less than 30 cents for ever dollar earned by their male counterparts.
  • Here are 11 specific examples that highlight the disparity.
  • Visit INSIDER's homepage for more.

While many actors certainly lead glamorous lives, TV and movie sets face many of the same challenges as other workplaces, including bias and inequality.

Hollywood's problem with pay disparity, for example, has received more and more attention over the last few years. The gender pay gap is a systemic, worldwide injustice, and Hollywood is no exception.

According to Forbes, the top 10 highest-paid actresses in 2018 earned less than 30 cents for ever dollar earned by their male counterparts. These actresses brought in a combined salary of $186 million, while the 10 highest-paid men earned $748.5 million.

Here are 11 specific examples of this disparity.

2018's highest-paid actress, Scarlett Johansson, made $198.5 million less than the highest-paid actor, George Clooney.

According to Forbes, Scarlett Johansson was the highest-earning actress of 2018, having brought in $40.5 million, largely thanks to her role in the MCU.

George Clooney, on the other hand, topped Forbes' list of highest-earning actors with a $239 million year.

Johansson, whose income was topped only by six male actors, was the only actress who earned as much as the men in the top 10.

Michelle Williams was paid eight times less than Mark Wahlberg for "All the Money in the World"— and 1,500 times less for reshoots.

Mark Wahlberg's salary for "All the Money in the World"was reportedly $5 million. Michelle Williams' was $625,000, though the co-stars essentially had equal screen time.

A media firestorm also ignited when it was revealed that Wahlberg demanded $1.5 million for reshoots in the wake of the Kevin Spacey scandal, while Williams was reportedly paid less than $1,000.

After backlash, Wahlberg donated his earnings from the reshoots to the Time's Up campaign.

Diane Keaton didn't receive back-end pay for "Something's Gotta Give," while Jack Nicholson did.

In her 2011 memoir "Then Again," Diane Keaton revealed that she didn't get any back-end pay for "Something's Gotta Give," meaning she wasn't paid any percentage of the movie's profits after receiving her initial salary.

Her co-star, Jack Nicholson, did — and he had a smaller role in the 2003 comedy.

Chris Hemsworth stuffed Snickers bars in the heels of his daughter's shoes so she was tall enough to ride a rollercoaster at Disneyland

  • Chris Hemsworth used some pretty sly tactics to sneak his daughter onto a Disneyland ride that she was too small for.
  • Hemsworth said that his now-6-year-old daughter was upset when they weren't allowed to ride the "Tower of Terror" at the theme park because she didn't meet the height restrictions.
  • Instead of giving up, Hemsworth stuffed Snickers bars into his daughter's shoes to give her a height boost.
  • The pair were then let on the ride, but Hemsworth realized the limits were there for a reason when his daughter started rising up out of her seat.
  • The "Thor" actor told the anecdote while appearing on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Monday with his "Avengers" colleagues Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., and Paul Rudd.
  • Visit INSIDER's homepage for more and follow along with our coverage of "Avengers: Endgame" here.

Chris Hemsworth will stop at nothing to give his daughter what she wants.

The "Thor" shared a pretty wild anecdote about a trip to Disneyland with his now-6-year-old when appearing on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Monday.

Hemsworth was joined on Kimmel's couch by his "Avengers" colleagues Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., and Paul Rudd.

Read more:'Avengers' fans are freaking out over Thor's first impression of Captain Marvel in the new 'Endgame' trailer

The four actors were on the show ahead of the premiere of "Avengers: Endgame," which is due to be released on April 26 in the US. They talked about their matching tattoos, and favorite lines from the film franchise.

They also talked about Disneyland, where the cast recently assembled to celebrate a $5 million charity donation.

Hemsworth then spoke about taking his own daughter to the famous theme park a couple of years ago, and it has some people rattled.

Chris Hemsworth appears on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

"I took my daughter on it a couple of years ago when it was previously called the Tower of Terror or something," Hemsworth said of the ride that is now called "Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout!"

The ride is a tower attraction where visitors are lifted to more than 180 feet before suddenly being dropped at high speed.

However, Hemsworth's daughter India Rose — who is now 6 — was too short for the ride's height requirement, which is set at 1.02 meters (3'9"). Instead of giving up, Hemsworth revealed a cunning plan to sneak his daughter onto the ride.

"She was really upset," he said, "And I was like nah, forget this. Come here."

In order to make up the height difference, Hemsworth went on: "I grabbed a couple of Snicker bars and slammed it in the back of her shoe under the heel."

"I walked up [to the Disneyland staff], was like, 'What about now?'

"And they're like, 'Okay, in you come,'" Hemsworth said to applause from the audience.

However, Johansson chimed in: "It's wildly irresponsible as well, and you're all cheering."

Hemsworth and his daughter managed to get on the ride, but the actor soon realised that perhaps the height limits were there for a reason.

"So, we're sitting in the chair... We're at the top and I'm looking at her and she's strapped in and the seat is massive on her," he said.

Hemsworth then described the moment the ride dropped and mimiced his daughter rising out of her seat: "[I] grab onto her, she's like screaming the whole way down.

"I was like maybe there's a reason there's a height sign."

At which point in the story, Downey Jr. exclaims: "Maybe!?"

Hemsworth seems to have learned his lesson, though — he finished the story by saying: "So, don't do that. She's fine, she's well. I'm her hero."

Watch him tell the full story here:

Fans on Twitter were quick to criticise the actor for potentially endangering his daughter.

"Putting things in your daughter's shoes so she can go on a Disney ride??? Really??? Those rules are there to protect your child! #ParentFail,"wrote one person.

Buzzfeed even titled their coverage: "This Story About Chris Hemsworth Sneaking His Daughter Onto A Rollercoaster Proves Why Height Restrictions Matter."

But the actor also received some support from fans who thought his commitment to getting his daughter on the ride was adorable.

"Chris Hemsworth putting snicker bars in his daughter's shoe so she was tall enough to ride tower of terror is the funniest dad story I've ever heard,"wrote one.

"You can’t tell me that Chris Hemsworth sticking snickers into his daughter's shoes so she would be tall enough for a rollercoaster ride isn’t EXACTLY what Thor would do for his kid,"tweeted another.
