Scarlett Johansson says that she was "typecast as hypersexualized" years ago, but there have been changes in the entertainment industry since then.

"The climate is so different now, there's so many wonderful opportunities for women of every age to play all different types of people," the 34-year-old star said during a conversation with Jennifer Lopez, Laura Dern, Lupita Nyong'o, Renée Zellweger, and Awkwafina for The Hollywood Reporter's "Actress Roundtable."

Johansson continued: "When I was working in my early 20s and even my late teens, I felt that I got somehow typecast as hypersexualized, which I guess at the time seemed OK to everyone — it was another time — even though it wasn't part of my own narrative."

"It was kind of crafted for me by probably a bunch of dudes in the industry," she added.

Johansson has been acting since she was 8 years old and landed her earliest roles in the '90s. She went on to earn four total Golden Globe nominations for her roles in "Lost in Translation,""Girl With a Pearl Earring,""A Love Song for Bobby Long," and "Match Point."

During her THR discussion, Johansson said that "it was really difficult for me to try to figure out how to get out of being an ingenue or the 'other woman' because it was never anything that I had intended."

"I remember thinking at the time that maybe I needed a different job in this industry that would be more fulfilling, because it seemed like there was nowhere to go," she said.

The actress made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in 2010's "Iron Man 2" and has starred in several superhero films since then. In 2019, her character's storyline came to a conclusion in "Avengers: Endgame," but she'll be starring in a standalone "Black Widow" prequel movie set to hit theaters in May 2020.

The actress went on to say that making her Broadway debut in 2010 in Arthur Miller's "A View From the Bridge" was "liberating" and affected her acting career.

"It totally reset my whole way of thinking about how I could work, and what different kinds of opportunities could be available to me," she said. "It's amazing how theater is limitless."

Most recently, Johansson has been gaining Oscar buzz for her performance in the Noah Baumbach-directed drama "Marriage Story."

Jennifer Lopez said 'the Bronx came out' when a director 'wanted to see my boobs' off-set

Jennifer Lopez credited her New York City upbringing for giving her the confidence to stand up against sexual harassment in the film industry.

The 50-year-old "Hustlers" actress spoke candidly about how a director once asked her to remove her top in an intimate setting before shooting a nudity scene.

"He wanted to see my boobs," she recalled. "And I was like, 'We're not on-set.'"

Speaking in a female-friendly space, Lopez shared her experience with her fellow actresses Laura Dern, Scarlett Johansson, Renee Zellweger, Awkwafina, and Lupita Nyong'o at a roundtable hosted by The Hollywood Reporter. All the women have been vocal about the #MeToo movement since it took off back in 2017.

Lopez told the actresses that another woman was also present in the room, which made her think twice about whether the request was professional.

She said while the female costume designer kept quiet in the room, the actress used a bit of her "Jenny from the Block" attitude to push back.

She said: "Luckily, a little bit of the Bronx came out, and I was like, 'I don't have to show you my — no. On the set, you see them.'"

Johansson asked who the director was, but Lopez kept the names of the person and the movie under wraps.

She added that "Hustlers" used a comfort coach, which she described as "basically somebody who understood that world and said, 'These things are OK,' and, 'These things are not OK.'"

@JLo reveals how “terrified” she was to film her pole dancing sequence, why she sought #romcoms early in her career and much more on the #THRRoundtable.

  • Scarlett Johansson says she "mishandled" the backlash that she faced in 2018 after accepting a role as a transgender man named Dante "Tex" Gill in the biopic "Rub & Tug."
  • At the time, the "Avengers: Endgame" star said that people should direct their criticism to the representatives of cisgender actors like Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman, who have all played transgender characters.
  • She went on to apologize for her comment and drop out of the movie.
  • Johansson told Vanity Fair that she "was not sensitive."
  • "I learned a lot through that process," she added. "I misjudged that…. It was a hard time. It was like a whirlwind. I felt terribly about it. To feel like you're kind of tone-deaf to something is not a good feeling."

Scarlett Johansson says she incorrectly reacted to the backlash surrounding her casting as a transgender character in the movie "Rub & Tug."

"In hindsight, I mishandled that situation," the "Marriage Story" star said in a cover story for Vanity Fair. "I was not sensitive, my initial reaction to it."

In July 2018, Deadline reported that Johansson would be starring as Dante "Tex" Gill, a transgender man and Pittsburgh crime kingpin in the 1970s, in the biopic.

In response to the criticism regarding a cisgender actor portraying a transgender character, Johansson said to Bustle via her representative: "Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment."

The "Avengers: Endgame" star was referring to cisgender actors who have played transgender roles on "Transparent," and in "Dallas Buyers Club," and "Transamerica," respectively.

Following additional waves of backlash, Johansson dropped the role and told Out magazine in a statement: "In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project."

Johansson went on to say that she "learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive."

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Johansson admitted that she "wasn't totally aware of how the trans community felt about those three actors playing — and how they felt in general about cis actors playing — transgender people."

"I wasn't aware of that conversation — I was uneducated," she added. "So I learned a lot through that process. I misjudged that…. It was a hard time. It was like a whirlwind. I felt terribly about it. To feel like you're kind of tone-deaf to something is not a good feeling."

  • Marvel Studios released the first teaser trailer for "Black Widow" Tuesday morning.
  • In addition to Scarlett Johansson's return as Natasha Romanoff, we met an entire group of Russian friends she knew in her former life.
  • Though the first trailer is action-packed, it may have left you a bit confused over what — and who — you were looking at. If the trailer left you wondering when this movie takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have you covered.
  • From a tease of Budapest to a quick reference to Black Widow's "Avengers: Infinity War" vest, Insider breaks down the smaller details you may have missed while watching the trailer the first time around.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

It looks like we're finally going to find out what happened in Budapest!

Did you recognize the opening shot of the "Black Widow" trailer? That's a shot of Budapest!

Why is Budapest so important? Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow and Clint Barton/Hawkeye have only been discussing some vague event that happened there since the events of 2012's "Avengers" movie.

The duo most recently referenced Budapest during their final trip to Vormir in "Avengers: Endgame." That probably wasn't a coincidence. Are we finally going to learn what exactly went down there? And, if so, can we expect a Hawkeye cameo? We sure hope so.

The train station seen here is also in Budapest. It's the Keleti station.

If you weren't familiar with the station, the little flags for Hungary that line that walls were a big hint.

A young General Ross will appear in the movie.

Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since "The Incredible Hulk." We expect to see him to be a part of the Budapest story line. That's Hungarian writing seen on the cargo ship behind him.

The "Black Widow" trailer references a few shots from "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

You weren't having déjà vu. We've seen those flashback scenes with Black Widow revisiting her childhood before. The ballerina scenes were part of a vision Scarlet Witch made Black Widow see during "Age of Ultron" from her past. The main difference between the two versions of scenes is that the ones in the "Black Widow" teaser, seen above, are softer than the ones seen in "Age of Ultron."

Since 2012's "Avengers," we've been getting bits and pieces about Romanoff's mysterious past in flashbacks and pieces of dialogue. You may recall in "Avengers" that Loki name dropped Natasha's supposed father to her, leaving her quite unsettled. We've been waiting to see all of these pieces finally come together.

When does this movie take place? Most likely before "Avengers: Infinity War."

Black Widow's ever-changing hair styles have been helpful in making sense of the MCU timelines.

While it appears we'll revisit Black Widow's past in Budapest, we see her with longer, braided red hair through the majority of the trailer. It's a look the character embraced later on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the "Iron Man" movies and first "Avengers," Natasha's hair was bright red early on until "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Captain America: Civil War."

It's likely the main timeline of "Black Widow" takes place between "Captain America: Civil War" and "Avengers: Infinity War." It probably begins not too long after "Civil War" ends. Why?

We know there's a good chunk of time missing between those two movies where Black Widow, Captain America, and more were on the run from Ross and the government. At the end of "Captain America: Civil War," Tony Stark told Ross that Black Widow helped Captain America escape from the government. At the start of "Infinity War," we find that Black Widow has been forced to change her hair length and color while on the run.

From the trailer, it seems like we may see a juxtaposition of Ross hunting down Black Widow after "Civil War" with a previous time in the past when he was chasing her.

The white suit is a nod to a look Black Widow wore in a 2010 comic.

Let's talk about that white suit. Black Widow wore the white suit in 2010's "Deadly Origins" issue No. 2.

Black Widow's white suit was on display at Disney's D23 Expo earlier this summer where Insider got a sneak peek of it in person.

Black Widow refers to this character, Yelena (played by Florence Pugh), as her sister. She's not her actual sister.

That's a simple term the Black Widow trainees used to refer to themselves while training together in the Red Room that's also shown in the trailer. They consider themselves family.

Fans think they've spotted a familiar vest in this scene.

Does the vest on Yelena ring any bells?

Fans think Yelena is wearing the vest Natasha eventually wears in "Avengers: Infinity War."

The color in the trailer looks a little off, but the two sure look similar.

No, that's not Hawkeye. That's a Black Widow villain named Taskmaster.

Taskmaster has been the long-rumored villain of the "Black Widow" movie. In the comics, the character injected himself with a serum that gave him various abilities similar to other Marvel heroes and villains. He's good with a sword (like Black Knight, who's getting his own Marvel series), martial arts (like Shang-Chi), can shoot a bow and arrow (like Hawkeye), and more.

Essentially, he's capable of quickly learning someone's fight strategy to combat and negate their next move.

Who is David Harbour's character anyway? He's Russia's Captain America.

Yes! David Harbour ("Stranger Things") is in this, too. His character, the Red Guardian, is Russia's version of Captain America. That's not even a joke. Thought for dead, Alexei Shostakov became a KGB agent who was trained to become the Soviet version of the American hero.

Harrington (32) and Leslie (32) tied the knot in Scotland in June 2018.

Kate Hudson and Danny Fujikawa

Kate Hudson chose to announce her relationship with Danny Fujikawa at the premiere of her mom Goldie Hawn's movie "Snatched."

Hudson (40) and Fujikawa (33) welcomed a daughter Rani Rose in October 2018.

Hailey Baldwin and Shawn Mendes

Hailey Bieber (then-Baldwin) and Shawn Mendesreportedly began dating in early 2017, and arrived with arms around each other at the Met Gala in May.

But just a month later, Baldwin re-kindled with her old flame Justin Bieber and got engaged to him in June.

Mendes spoke to US Weekly about their confusing dating timeline and said: "I don't even want to put a title on it ... I think it was more of a zone of limbo."

Hailey (22) and Bieber (25) held their wedding in September this year, while Mendes has since enjoyed a much-publicized romance with Camila Cabello.

Selena Gomez and The Weeknd

After months of the paparazzi snapping the singers together, it wasn't until the Met Gala that Selena Gomez fans had confirmation the star had moved on from Justin Bieber.

The Weeknd had also recently broken up with Bella Hadid a few months before, but after almost a year of dating, the couple called it quits in October 2017.

The Weeknd (29) has since continued an off-again on-again relationship with Hadid, while Gomez (27) said in October that she's "super, super single."

Elizabeth Olsen and Robbie Arnett

The "Avengers" actress (30) and Arnett (27) got engaged in July.

Charlie Heaton and Natalie Dyer

The chemistry between Charlie Heaton and Natalie Dyer came across so strongly on "Stranger Things" that fans began to wonder whether it was really all just for television.

Two years later Dyer (22) and Heaton (25) are still going strong.

Diane Kruger and Norman Reedus

Diane Kruger told Conan O'Brien she met the "The Walking Dead" actor back in 2006, and even went out for drinks with him one evening. But it wasn't until the two starred together in 2015 drama "Sky" that they reconnected again.

The unlikely couple arrived together just a few months after Elon Musk broke things off with Amber Heard.

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse

The actors behind "Riverdale" characters Jughead Jones and Betty Cooper tried to hide their real-life romance for as long as possible, but all was revealed when they attended the Met Gala together in 2018.

The couple happily took photos gazing into each other's eyes with Lili Reinhart later sharing a behind-the-scenes selfie of her and Cole Sprouse on Instagram.

In July, reports surfaced that Reinhart (22) and Sprouse (27) had split, but the two indirectly denied these reports in interviews and Instagram posts.

Katharine McPhee and David Foster

After being good friends for a number of years, this musical couple brought their relationship out into the open when they arrived together at the Met Gala in 2018.

David Foster met Katharine McPhee way back in 2006 when she was a contestant on the fifth season of "American Idol," where he guest-mentored and prepared her to sing Whitney Houston's"I Have Nothing," which he also helped to write.

But in mid-October, a source told US Weekly the pair had gone their separate ways.

Evan Peters and Halsey

After seven years of affectionate tweets, Halsey and Evan Peters confirmed they were together by couple-costuming for Halloween.

Halsey wrote about her "crush" on Peters back in 2014, reportedly writing a "Petition for Evan Peters to date me," according to 22 Words, but has since deleted those tweets.

After Peters broke off his engagement with Emma Roberts in March, the two finally rekindled.

Ellen DeGeneres also scared Halsey into calling Peters her boyfriend on her show in late-October.

Keanu Reeves and Alexandra Grant

The pair are reported to have been long-time friends and business partners.

Chris Evans helped his "Avengers: Endgame" costar Scarlett Johansson with her dress during the 2020 Golden Globes, and people are praising the actor for being a gentleman.

The two stars attended the award show, which was hosted by Ricky Gervais, on Sunday night at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. They presented the award for best actor in a musical or comedy to the "Rocketman" star Taron Egerton and the trophy for best actress in a musical or comedy to Awkwafina for her role in "The Farewell."

Evans, known for playing Captain America/Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, offered Johansson (Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff) his arm as they walked onstage together, and he was seen moving the train of her voluminous red Vera Wang dress out of the way to keep her from tripping over it.

You can see the moment, which was recorded inside the event by The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg, in the video below.

Fans who caught a glimpse of the moment gushed over Evans' chivalry and the way he looked out for the "Marriage Story" star.

This wasn't the first time Evans had caught the attention of fans with his helpful gestures. During the 2019 Oscars, the actor jumped out of his seat and offered his arm to Regina King as she walked onstage to accept the award for best supporting actress for her role in "If Beale Street Could Talk."

At the 77th Golden Globes, the 38-year-old Evans wore a burgundy outfit from Isaia and attended with his brother, Scott Evans. Johansson paired up with her fiancé, Colin Jost, and she was also nominated for an award for her role in Netflix's "Marriage Story."

Johansson made her Marvel debut in 2010's "Iron Man 2," and Evans made his first appearance as Steve Rogers in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger." They costarred in 2012's "The Avengers" and went on to appear in a few more MCU films together: "Captain America: The Winter Soldier,""Avengers: Age of Ultron,""Captain America: Civil War,""Avengers: Infinity War," and "Avengers: Endgame."

2019: Daisy May Cooper

British comedian Daisy May Cooper wore a dress made entirely of bin bags and trash at the 2019 BAFTAs. Her outfit even had a bin lid hat complete with a plastic pigeon.

She told reporters it cost her mom just £5 ($6.50) to make as she decided to donate the money she would have spent on a designer dress to her local food bank.

The glamorous gown was entirely hand-embroidered with Swarovski crystals and took 550 hours to create.

Scarlett Johansson wore one of her most daring looks to date at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTAs) on Sunday.

She walked the red carpet in a pink Versace gown, which was sleeveless with a plunging neckline. The dress also had a form-fitting bodice, which was covered in red sparkles, and a feather-covered skirt. The latter piece extended into a short train behind her.

On Instagram, stylist Molly Dickson confirmed that the gown was custom-made for Johansson.

As she turned to walk the red carpet, Johansson revealed that her standout dress also included a thigh-high slit and sharp cutouts across her waist. One cutout on the left side of her gown even revealed a black rose tattoo.

For accessories, the "Black Widow" actress wore gold sandals and jewels from Nikos Koulis.

The thin straps of Johansson's gown formed more triangular cutouts across her back, where she has more rose tattoos.

To complete her pink-hued look, Johansson donned rosy makeup that complimented her gown perfectly. She wore matching eye shadow and blush, as well as glossy pink lipstick.

Hours later, Johansson changed her look completely. While attending a BAFTAs after-party at the Chiltern Firehouse in London, she wore a black minidress with long sleeves, gold buttons, and a square neckline. She also donned sheer tights and black pumps, and opted for more minimal makeup.

Celebs like Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, and Martha Stewart are landing C-suite gigs at white-hot companies like HumanCo and Vital Proteins as startups create hybrid influencer-exec roles

Summary List Placement

As collagen brand Vital Proteins gets new products on store shelves this year, the company has one unlikely exec to thank for making them possible: Actress Jennifer Aniston.

Aniston serves as chief creative officer at Vital Proteins, a job that combines elements of being a social media influencer with the more in-the-weeds responsibilities of product development.

Kurt Seidensticker, the founder and CEO of Vital Proteins, said he and Aniston got to know each other after she became a regular user of the company's collagen products, such as creamer and water. As chief creative officer, she helped craft Vital's new collagen gummies. "We've run early innovation by her, and she's provided feedback on where she thinks products should go," Seidensticker told Insider in an interview.

Celebrities have signed on to be the face of brands for decades. But many are now signing deals that give them executive titles at the brands they work with. Along with that comes much more than just appearing in ads for products: Many celebrities that go this route advise on products in development and have a say on the business's strategy — something that spokespeople don't get to do.

Besides Aniston, other notable celebrity executives include actress Scarlett Johansson, who became chief creative officer and an investor at a healthy food brand owned by HumanCo in April, as well as chef Martha Stewart, who joined the board of directors at upscale chain BurgerFi earlier this year.

"Instead of a brand going out and saying 'Will you be the face of my campaign?' they're looking for something that's more of an authentic connection," said Stacy Jones, CEO and founder of Hollywood Branded, an agency that handles deals between celebrities and brands.

"They are becoming more common, and it's been something that's been happening over the last five or six years," she added.

At Vital Proteins, Aniston's star power is part of the strategy. Seidensticker said he and Aniston had been talking about a partnership of some kind for years, but it really took form after the actress opened an Instagram account and started posting about her personal wellness routine and how she uses collagen.

From that perspective, the brand's work with Aniston makes her look like an influencer. "Let's have Jen explain and educate people about the benefit of collagen, but let's actually also dig deep into her own routine," Seidensticker said, explaining the approach. "I think her discovery and wellness is applicable to everyone."

But she's also part of the product development. Seidensticker said that Aniston is involved in picking new flavors for new products, and the company is considering a Jen-themed snack bar based around more of her input. "It's pretty interactive," Seidensticker said of Vital Proteins's relationship with Aniston.

Asked whether Aniston's agreement with Vital Proteins includes an investment in the brand, Seidensticker declined to provide details, citing confidentiality, but said: "Our collaboration goes beyond simply an endorsement."

Other recent agreements give celebrities a similar say in products. Under the HumanCo agreement, Johansson is contributing "her insights and ideas to product development" for the company's Snow Days pizza pocket brand. And at BurgerFi, Stewart is chairing the board's product and innovation committee. The companies did not provide details on their agreements with Johansson or Stewart, though HumanCo did confirm that Johansson made an investment.

While celebrities taking more involved roles at brands isn't new, their focus on getting in the door at up-and-coming ones is a more recent development, Jones told Insider. Many are interested in getting in on the ground floor of a startup, both with an ownership stake and with some say over how the brand grows. Other recent examples include actress Dakota Johnson becoming co-creative director at sexual wellness brand Maude and Kerry Washington making an investment and taking a role at direct-to-consumer jewelry brand Aurate.

"There's much more upside for them to carve out percentages and provide these celebrities the opportunity to be a stakeholder because they actually have the ability to truly impact and drive sales for the brand," Jones said.

But the startup world can be chaotic, and celebrities are likely to seek a royalty payment or other compensation upfront in case the startup goes under, she said. "They don't know if they're going to be lending their face to something that's going to be a colossal failure," Jones said, adding that celebrities are taking one of these hybrid influencer-executive roles "as an investment decision."

Brands also have to do due diligence before welcoming celebrities into their C-suite, she said. In traditional endorsement deals, celebrities are used to sticking closely to a contract, such as making a set number of public appearances on behalf of the company.

That approach might not work for companies when the celebrity in question has committed to developing products, building marketing strategies from the inside, or other open-ended projects. "What they have to look at is: Is this a celebrity who is actually going to take it up to that next level and be a true partner?" Jones said.
